So what makes side projects so great? For starters, the fact that they’re simple, self-contained, and usually free (more on that later too) makes it much easier for them to go viral. Launching a self project is also a great asset for your résumé, as it demonstrates creativity and initiative. And going back to my first point about virality, you score huge points when a potential employer or new client finds out you’re the guy behind that cool thing they saw on Twitter last week.

I’m a big believer in side projects – whether they make money or not. It’s a way to practice new things and show that you care. It sets you apart from the crowd and will enable you to meet new people.
