Gabriel Weinberg, a tech angel investor dives into why he tries to slow down hiring at startups. It makes sense – to have more reasonable growth. Any start up can fill up their time with growth, the question is if they are focusing on the right things to do. Often times, hackers want to build their product and ship. Yes, it’s important to ship, but there is so much planning that goes around a successful launch: distribution, operations, etc.
Gabriel gives, in my recommendation, a solid recommendation for any business, big or small.
One approach I like that some of my portfolio companies are taking is to tie hiring decision points to traction milestones, e.g. once we hit $xK/month in revenue we’ll do our next hire.
